NTLL: History Timeline
From our inception through today, North Torrance Little League has gone
from one league to two and then back to one. Over this time, our league
has called a number of locations -- including one outside of north
Torrance -- home.
The timeline and field history map below outline the history of NTLL
through the years. Since we have very few official records from much
of our history, this timeline was pieced together from those limited
records, from a few old photos, and from the recollection of some former
players. Special thanks to alumnus Bruce Campbell and Leon Smith, Jr
for providing a lot of the information below.
If you have any information (programs, photos, recollections) you would
like to add, please
e-mail the webmaster.
Timeline
==>
1955: NTLL inaugural season
played at Dominguez Field
off of 190th & Beryl. The first opening day for NTLL was held on
Sunday, May 22, 1955.
==>
1959: NTLL splits into NTLL East & NTLL West. Dividing line for
residency is Falda Avenue. Both leagues still play at the same location,
but a second diamond is needed and built at Dominguez Fields.
==>
1961: NTLL East moves to Garrett Field
off of 190th & Van Ness Avenue (then named Arlington Avenue), on the property of Garrett Air Research
(now Honeywell). NTLL West
remains at Dominguez Fields.
==>
1964: NTLL East hosts Little League Western Region Tournament.
Division champions from the western U.S. and Canada competed at
Garrett Field on Aug 20-22. A crowd of 7,000 and a television
audience in the millions watched La Puente Little League defeat East
Trails, British Columbia 4-3 in the final for a birth to the Little
League World Series the following week in Pennsylvania.
==>
1968(?): NTLL East moves to Hamilton Fields (current NTLL location),
behind Hamilton Adult School.
==>
1969 or 1970: NTLL West moved to
Montgomery Fields off Western
Avenue, between Del Amo & 190th. The old Fre-way Little League
fields were located just north of the NTLL West fields.
==>
1984(?): NTLL East and West are combined
and play at Hamilton Fields.
